Again, it is one of those idiotic things: although we were right to ally with Stalin, as Hitler was the greater danger, the principle of dealing with regimes "on the ground", and choosing the lesser of two evils does not occur to these people as a generalization. Therefore, if we made choices to support obnoxious regimes in other circumstances, we are responsible for all of their defects. That is because, of course, such people do not take seriously that we were engaged in a worldwide competition with Communism, and that we had reason to make such choices. Eliminate that contest, and all that is left is "gangster capitalism"......

Noam Chomsky et al are basically playing a literary game. That is, instead of looking into the history of Communism and the fear of Communism in the West, they not only suppose that Communism was no great threat, but that the fear of it was a tool of the ruling class to manipulate the masses. Then they reconstruct history on the basis of these assumptions. It is not scholarship, because they do not bother to prove the main assumptions. Rather, it is "as if" narrative, posing as historical analysis. This, despite the fact that Lenin and his associates ruthlessly suppressed other Left wing parties to ensure their total control of the government, leading Emma Goldwin to return to North America to denounce the Bolsheviks; this despite Khruschev's admission of Stalin's crimes; this despite the continued offensive stance of Warsaw Pact forces in Europe throughout the Cold War; this despite the fact that Khruschev was ousted from power for penny- ante liberalization, to be succeeded by Breshnev, who held power until the '80s; this despite the dedication of the Comintern, and latter the Cominform, to world- wide revolution; this despite everything, it was all just a form of mass hysteria encouraged by the ruling class. Pardon, but the America Firsters discounted the threat of Hitler, and we were sorry to have waited so long to oppose him. The post- War generation may be forgiven for not wanting things to get so far out of hand again......

To the peasents in Latin America on whom we waged war, those Swastikas are appropriate. To you in your cushy dining room with your box of Fruit Loops, they are unimaginable.
