The threat of Communism was real indeed, Neocon...

After Eastern Europe was enslaved by the Russians, we chose a policy of "containment" to prevent the further spread of police-states. In Asia, the Mao version had the same ends of exporting communism throughout the region. Short of touching off WW III, we did have to make very difficult choices in supporting repressive regimes in countries where the only alternative was a puppet communist government. It is completely disingenuous to claim that we had some selfish interest in propping up these regimes, other than forestalling a future world made up of East Germany's and North Korea's.
