"It is completely disingenuous to claim that we had some selfish interest in propping up these regimes, other than forestalling a future world made up of East Germany's and North Korea's."

The current defeat of the Taleban in Afghanistan is a wonderful opportunity to take advantage of the knowledge of our own history. That is, by not repeating some past mistakes. There are people in the region who have a sense of vision and who are strong in the principles of human justice. However, these are not the people most likely to rise to power any more than in the past. Our mistakes in the past had to do with thinking our responsibility ends with honoring war heroes.
