Re: 1GB DDR sticks now are all buffered registered ecc. Another nasty surprise is that they don't work with all the motherboards we had in house.

My VAR had to special order memory from Acer when I needed unbuffered unregistered 512meg SDRAM 2 years ago to get 2 gig of ram on an old Abit KA7 board.

Samsung says they are shipping 512M dice (what you need) as of last month. samsungelectronics.com

Here's the spec sheet for their branded 1GIG unbuffered DIMM, (not yet shipping as of last month)
samsungelectronics.com

You might need Acer or someone else to put together the DIMMs from the Samsung chips for you if you don't want to wait. They accommodated my VAR two year ago for an order of 4 pieces.

P.S.- NOTE I found:

Windows 98 and Windows Millennium Edition (Windows ME) DO NOT SUPPORT more than 512 megabytes of system memory without adjusting system parameters (not recommended). If your system is running Windows 98 or Windows ME and if you plan to use more than 512 megabytes of system memory, you will want to upgrade to Windows XP (for most consumers) or Windows 2000 (for business environments). Some users have avoided the need to upgrade the operating system by replacing the original memory (usually two 64MB modules) with two new 256MB modules. This keeps the system from going above the 512MB limit.
