I don't know diddly about wirless networking, but I do know the answer to this:

And, is there any way to link a doorstopper like a 486-66, into a LAN or more precisely is there a limit to how far you can go back in computer technology and still be able to put in a NIC card?

If you can squeeze the card into one of the sockets near the bottom/back of the computer (PCI/ISA), then the rest is completely dependent upon the operating system you are running and how up to date it is. Anything Win95+ should be fine.
