the indicted terrorist had abandoned his al Qaeda fighters and turned his back on the cause now that the battle appeared to be lost. Trouble is (and this was discussed some time ago) the very nature of the battle has changed. There is foreign troops on the ground with much sought after supplies and arms. Bandits will abound. The "cause" can be picked up again if they start having an effect. Opposing that are some determined and well trained troops. My suggestion would be to distribute the food, help set up the government, but get the troops out in 6 mths or so. I see no problem with forcing the pace of Afghanistans development, they have to sort it out for themselves.

I'll join ya on the conscription issue only as far as I've heard many a career soldier indicate a preference for a volunteer by their sides in a shootout. In a duck-and-cover situation, they want someone who'll cover them, not just duck. However, I do favor a National Service mandate that gets the idea of participatory democracy across to many who take-for-granted what has been hard won. A bit of Peace Corps, CCC, VISTA, military, Americorps tossed together in a pot to pursue national objectives in foreign policy, domestic policy and infrastructure upkeep, open to all genders, ethnicities and faiths... A 2 year minimum requirement. Yup. It provides plenty of choice within the confines of a real life expectation that freedom is never free of responsibility.
