Tim,Being atheistic is not the same as being non theistic.
In the same way that amoral = that you do not adhere to any more code, then atheistic also means that you do not adhere to any theisms
I see the definition covers both of these aspects, disbelief and denial.

I fail to believe in the existence of gods, but in a scientific sense it is not possible to deny they exist, just that I have never seen either them or anthing manifest as of them.
