...social scientists are still baffling over how many..

Regarding education. Well known here that your career is mapped out for you by age 11. Hence we used to have the "11 plus" exam so sort out who's who. Very important to start school, for instance, before age 5. This is why I left the USA when one of my daughters birthday was inconveniently placed and she would not have started school until she was nearly 6!!! Also, local teachers did not think she was mature enough to start school. By USA standards, they were probably correct, but it didn't matter, we were outta there.

So, not all of us are fortunate enough to be first class statisticians. No need for concern, a solution is at hand and can be downloaded for free...

sas.com

15 Mb disc space needed.

You have to go though a registration process, and it is only a demo. It is a first class industrial product so it probably costs a few $100 to buy. I have used lots of this type of stuff and imho this is the easiest, simplest, software to use. Following the help files, you can self teach on how to use. Lots of example Datasets to play with.
You can down load data tables from excel, lotus, text files to start with. It's about as hard as Excel or Lotus 123 to learn how to use. It's completely flexible and you can process even the most complicated statistical problems with it.

With a bit of practice, you to can be a high class statistician of the first order!!! Happy statistical discoveries!!!

OT: In respect to FaultLine's request, I am not going to discuss the I.Q. issue, though I could have easily defeated you in any argument on the subject since I have an I.Q. of approximately 150 :-)
