Pearly, that software is $895 for a single user, $395 for an academic user (like me!). What does it do that makes it worth that much money?

Well known here that your career is mapped out for you by age 11.

This seems to be true in France as well. Elementary school is really much better there than in the US, but the school system is really a filter rather than a pump. It's pretty clear that the structure of educational systems is closely tied with culture, and France being very highly centralized and top down reflects this in their concept of public education.

Some of the comments about kids just out of high school in connection with the selective service really reflect the cultural situation here in the US as much as anything, since it doesn't play out quite the same way in France from what I saw.

I'm thankful I was *not* in one of these European school systems since I probably wouldn't have even been a garbage man. It was having done well on some Regents (New York State) scholarship tests that got an alert guidance councilor to orient me toward college rather than just tech school.

As far as trafficking in statistics... I've always been a bit suspicious about black box tools and software that free one from their understanding of what they're doing. No matter what one does, one has to spend the time to learn the limitations of any tool, and it always takes some real effort. Which can be well worth it, since used correctly some of this software gives you incredible leverage.
