Elmer, yes, phenomenal Intel yields are the thing that allows Intel to produce 3 times as many of it's flagship CPU in 6 fabs as AMD produces in 1 fab.

Yields must be well over 100% now, since the Coppermine had yields of 90% at 120mm die size, and the die sizes are now 146mm or 210mm.

Ten times the FAB costs?

[Monica]:12+ million Pentium 4's in Q4 of 2001 is about 3 times the number of Athlons that AMD produced in the same quarter - about 4 million. I thought the geniuses on this thread said nobody wanted the Pentium 4, Intel couldn't produce the Pentium 4, etc. Looks like a reality check for some of you guys.
[Elmer]It is quite remarkable when you consider that the P4 is much larger than Athlon and should yield much less per wafer, all else being equal. The only reasonable explanation is either #1 phenomenal yields at Intel or #2 terrible yields at AMD or #3 AMD is intentionally holding back production at F30...

I think the "AMDroids" would like a few more reality checks like the Athlon. I think we would be thrilled if the Hammer vs. P5 (wait INTC doesn't have a P5 slated for the Hammer time frame- stupid me!)- nay P4 reality check plays out the same as the Athlon vs. PIII and P4 reality check.

INTC had to spend 7 billion $'s last year in fab costs vs. AMD's ~900million (a 7.7X difference) to slip to a 3.3X (77% vs. 23%) difference in market share. On top of that AMD set records for their processor shipments in each of the last 3Q's (or was it last 4Q's)! How's that for a reality check!
