Whoopeee. People asking even on this thread “what is EDGE”. The chicken have come home to roost (I tried to think of as irritating saying as possible but unfortunately this is all I could come up with).

EDGE is an air interface improvement over GPRS, a modulation job. How this will affect Q comes from the fact that there is plenty of speed available for any operator, theor max over 400 kbs, in practice in the field about 120 kbs. And this is with non-Q stuff.

This leads to the question asked by some smart asses (me included) is that how fast data speed you need into your mobile phone? Is it going to be infinite strive for ever-faster speeds? In which case 3G will come like a juggernaut, whatever that is. Or is it going to be like the speed of cars which have not much developed since -64 when miniskirts came into fashion?

IMO even a moderate sounding 20 kbs packet data is excessive. A mobile phone with a larger-than-normal size screen of 30 x 40 mm requires 9.7 kbs for MPEG video. Furthermore, supposing it had a 256 MB memory card it can contain up to 7.3 hrs of such video.

And, as we are talking about packet data here, it can be automatically downloaded as you sleep, eat, drink and be merry (OK so unlike in GPRS/EDGE, CDMA2000 requires session set up first).
