To answer your question; I believe the environmental movement, with the assistance of the left wing mainstream media has been largely successful in painting "oil drilling" as environmentally freightening. And because of that whipped up fear, Governor Bush has responded to his constituents.

Let's face it, most people don't read the internet for information the way you and I might. Most Americans get their information regarding the environment from 7 second sound bites. Over the years, those sound bite messages have been extremely negative regarding the environmental safety of drilling.

Additionally, I do agree that Disney has an influence in the state of Florida. After all, they do mean quite a bit to the economy of Florida. But business interests take a back seat to Michael Eisner's personal agenda. He's a left wing environmental ideologue along the same lines as Ted Turner. And his motivation to use Disney as a weapon against drilling off the coast runs parallel to that agenda.

What you see as direct business interests are a by-product of the radical environmental movement which has whipped up fear regarding a host of activities related to energy excavation.

They have used the courts, the mainstream media, direct marketing, the schools and a host of other weapons to create the perception that drilling is ugly, nasty, and will ruin the environment. Seeing an oil rig off the coast as an intensely ugly eye sore of the magnitude you believe, is a part of that successful equation. Does an oil tanker give you the same ugly feeling? How about a sail boat?

50 years ago oil rigs weren't view as ugly eye sores which ruined the enviroment or tourism. They were probably viewed as marvels of engineering talent (Which they are).

So something has changed. That perception is what we're discussing as it relates to the tourism industry.

What capitalistic entity is preventing the drilling of oil in ANWR?
