Intel is already way behind IBM's 64-bit PowerPC, SUN's 64-bit Sparc, and Compaq's 64-bit Alpha - but so is AMD.

The PC market is ripe for the move to 64-bits. Itanium may not be absolutely essential to the immediate future of Intel, but it is absolutely essential to the mid-term future of Intel.

And this time around, AMD is coming from a base of experience with dual processor workstations, mobile chips, and controls its own platform destiny.

Intel has one more year to sort out Itanic, and the whole Itanic strategy is taking on water fairly fast...
