False premise - Texas beaches are as pristine as Florida and there is tons of oil production on and off-shore in Texas.

The sole purpose of environmental groups is to enact their agenda. Business (although it does needs to concern itself with long term strategic interests), is far more focused on meeting its current challenges and adjusting to shifting economic demands in the near future.

In addition, the mainstream media in America is dominated by a modern leftist philosophy which is in alignment with environmental groups. That "anti-energy exploration in America" message serves as a conduit giving environmental groups free advertisement to get their message out. A thousand Shell Oil companies couldn't afford advertisement which competed with that.

Also, the amount of money environmental groups pour into political campaigns is massive. That money buys influence, which in turn effects whether legislation makes it to the floor for a vote or not.

So to answer your paraphrase. Yes. In proportion to business "getting their message out", environmental groups have been far more successful in the past 50 years.

While it's true that some of that success is due to businesses abusing the environment, as provided by the examples you highlighted. Those examples, when you truly examine their negative effects, were relatively minor. The left wing media simply blew them way out of proportion in order to make people believe we were all going to die unless an immediate ban was put in place. Politicians are not immune from this influence and acted to dissuade a freightened public.

A perfect example is the Ozone hole theory and the banning of CFC's. Thousands of people probably die per-year in third world countries because they cannot inexpensively store medicine chilled. Yet, their stories are never told in the media. The only story told is "AHHH we've discovered a hole over Antartica, something must be done to stop this". The same is true regarding Global Warming alarmists. Although science doesn't support their alarmist view, they tried to got the entire world to support a treaty which would have negatively effective our economic health and prosperity for decades. President Bush showed a lot of political courage taking on these alarmists and payed a price for it in the left wing dominated media. Which capitalistic entities were acting to get that marxist legislation passed?

The positive message of how business success leads to a wealthier nation, and thus a cleaner environment, has been largely missing in the press. As an example, how many news events have you witnessed which have highlighted the sophisticated safe-guards built in to todays drilling platforms? How many news events have you seen describe the low amount of oil spills by off-shore drilling platforms when compared to oil tankers? How many news events have you seen telling the story that 70% of offshore drilling involves the extraction of natural gas? One of the safest, cleanest forms of energy we have? And lastly, how many news events have you seen highlighting the high paying jobs in oil platform work, and how those jobs have given families a good quality of life?

By and large those stories are never told. The same holds true regarding how much Alaskans have benefited from oil excavation. Why haven't they been told? Because the mainstream media, led by strong leftist like Ted Turner, are environmental radicals who want to moves us down a path where the government controls every stretch of land in America.

He, and those limousine liberal leftists like him, are only capitalists as long as it benefits them personally.
