TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's Sony Corp said on Wednesday that sales of its blockbuster game console PlayStation 2 more than doubled at home and in North America during the holiday season, a crucial sales period for the game industry.

The electronics giant sold more than five million units of PlayStation 2 worldwide during the period, helping to solidify its leadership position in the competitive game market.

"The sales results beat our internal objectives for the holiday season," a spokesman for Sony's game-making unit Sony Computer Entertainment said. He declined to say what the company's initial targets were.

Between the last week of November and the first week of January 1.1 million consoles were sold in Japan, 2.6 times more than in the same period a year earlier.

Sales in North America grew 2.4 times in December year on year. Between Thanksgiving week and the end of December, Sony sold 2.5 million consoles
