x86-64 will fail on its own. There is no reason to use it, other than as a marketing term. Since the K8 is designed to get near-64-bit performance with only 32-bits, then developers won't have a need to port their applications. It will be many years before Intel or AMD have to worry about reaching the memory barrier. Intel CPUs already support up to 64GB of memory with 36 address lines. They could easily add 4 or 8 more address lines without having to extend the instruction set architecture to 64-bits. There is simply no reason to do so. Therefore, AMD's product will not have a market, and the technology will eventually disappear.
