wbmw, you underestimate the power of marketing. I think MSFT alone may push 64-bit to the desktop for the sheer reason that they need to have people upgrade often. Same goes for all software producers. There have to make up reasons for people to upgrade. The whole industry depends on it. AMD is doing everyone a favour :).
