"..could explain in laymen's, non-technical terms.."

===========

My sister-in-law could not live without it.

Her daughter has left home for college.

The umbilical cord, though stretched by geography, is entirely intact.

She and her daughter use it chronically to stay in touch... throughout the day... every day.

It's like walkie-talkies.

Press the button to talk... release to listen.

Access is continuously available.

I'd appreciate it if someone could explain in laymen's, non-technical terms a non-technologist can understand what Qchat is and how it helps a carrier differentiate itself from its competition. Does it provide a direct source of revenue in and of itself to the carrier?

More info on Direct Connect (Nextel's version of Qchat)....like BG said it is sort of a walkie-talk with unlimited range.

nextel.com

Nextel has managed to carve a pretty good niche for itself with this feature. It is particuarly popular among businesses with scattered workers (like a construction crew). They have the highest ARPU in the industry (>$70) with some of the lowest churn. As far as I know, no GSM carrier in the world uses this feature (or has plans to offer it).

My understanding is that Direct Connect uses unlicensed spectrum....I'm not sure how QChat is going to work.
