ADM Milling closing down Des Moines flour mill

DECATUR, Ill., Jan 10 (Reuters) - ADM Milling Co. said on Thursday it is closing down its flour mill in Des Moines, Iowa after 85 years because of excess industry capacity and poor economic conditions.

The company, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Archer Daniels Midland Co. (NYSE:ADM - news), did not say how many employees would lose their jobs as a result of the closure. Shipments will cease on Jan. 17.

ADM Milling said the action was due to excess industry capacity and poor economic conditions and was part of a business evaluation of company-wide assets.

The closure ends over 85 years of flour production at the Des Moines mill that was rebuilt in 1917 after being destroyed by a fire. The mill had a rated capacity of 10,000 cwts. of flour per day.
