Taiwan stocks down 2.55 pct as profit-taking bites

sg.biz.yahoo.com

TAIPEI, Jan 11 (Reuters) - Taiwan stocks were down 2.55 percent at midday on Friday as investors took profits in memory chip manufacturers following declines in U.S. heavyweight Micron Technology .

By 0428 GMT, the TAIEX <.TWII> index was down 149.47 points to 5,721.81, after gaining nearly one percent in the first few minutes of trade to hit a nine-month intraday high.

Winbond Electronics <2344.TW> fell T$1.20, or 4.07 percent, to T$28.30 and was the most heavily traded issue after 241 million shares changed hands, while fellow DRAM maker Mosel Vitelic <2342.TW> was next on the active list, giving up 0.93 percent to T$21.40.

Like many memory chip firms, Winbond has nearly tripled in value since an October trough due to a sharp rise in spot prices of their products, and analysts said Thursday's pullback in U.S. semiconductor stocks offered an opportunity for profit-taking.

Industry leader Micron fell 3.6 percent on Thursday.
