The Durons fill the same function as the Celeron, it is the low end chip. I would guess this is why AMD is talking about farming Durons out to UMC. That way they can contract for what they have orders for, and then they don't have to dedicate fab space for it.

But I don't see what that has to do with the fact that Fab25 was under-utilized. AMD was convinced that the Duron was going to be their volume chip and sell in several multiples of Athlon sales. It didn't work out that way, probably because motherboard costs were so high until recently. By the time motherboard prices came down, so had processor prices, making the Duron not as desirable as it might have been.
