peter, re:"Thoroughbred will be released in Q1 at 1.733 GHz. 1.8 Ghz will follow in Q2." (from C't Michael Stiller)

Very good if it happens. 1.73 would be XP2200+, right? Is TBred supposed to have 512K L2, other enhancements, or just be a direct copy of the XP onto 0.13?

"AMD should NOT release Clawhammer with single channel support only."

I don't think it will be that big of a problem. What did we learn from DDR vs. DRDRAM? While bandwidth is nice, latency rules. Note that a P4 with 2.1GBytes/sec DDR runs about as fast as a P4 with 3.2GBytes/sec DRDRAM. The built-in memory controller is going to reduce the latency on the Hammers a lot. Much, much more than the latency decrease of moving from DRDRAM to DDR.

Remember that AMD projected, although how realistic it is I can't say, that a Hammer at 2GHz will produce a SPECint of 1400. Now true, that is likely with 128 bit wide memory, but it is unlikely that 2GHz will be the top bin, either. To put that number in perspective, note that the 2.2GHz Northwood turned in a SPECint of over 700.

AMD 768 Chipset USB Problem

Reported by: Chris Tom At: 5:15 PM Source:
I've verified with AMD and several motherboard makers that there is a USB problem with the 768 Southbridge that makes up a portion of the 760MPX chipset. There are a few situations where USB may not function. This has caused some motherboard makers to delay shipment of their 760MPX chipset based motherboards while others are shipping boards with a USB 2 PCI card. Steps are being undertaken to make sure that this USB problem is solved this quarter according to Damon Munzy of AMD. AMD stresses that the USB problem is limited in nature, but they do wish to fix it regardless of its scope.
