do you know if the US ever gave back the land they took from Japan after the war?

Well we certainly didn't give them back the Philippines, New Guinea, or Manchuria. We did recognize Okinawa as being part of Japan. What lands are you talking about?

However, we wish the war to end, if only we can have some concessions.

Exactly. And that does not qualify as being "DESPERATE" to end the war. It would have been political suicide for the leaders of the U.S. and Britain to agree to "concessions." The final decision to allow Japan to keep their Emperor was not a concession, but rather a self-interest choice as to what would work best in guiding the Japanese people back to an orderly, controlled, and peaceful society. If you review the Togo-Sato exchanges, it is clear that the Japanese knew about the softening attitude of the U.S. toward the Emperor's future role.

What it comes down to, is who dictates the terms of a surrender ... the victor or the vanquished?

Well, we gave them back Japan. Being the victors, we didn't have to do that. How much land do you think the Japanese would have given back had they won?

The US gave back the land that was actually part of Japan. We didn't let them keep or give back any of the conquered territory. The Russians still have control over some small islands that they took from Japan in August of 1945 that where part of Japan before WWII.
