Slacker: Thanks for the article. It certainly makes sense that PCS is going after CDMA2000 initially for the gains in voice capacity as they begin seeding their networks with phones that have MSM5105 chips that double capacity. This drives the most important economic case for the PCS network - developing voice capacity.

The soft launch/hard launch distinction is going to blow over when people realize PCS will be selling CDMA2000 phones in February or March that will be fully 3G compliant by June for both voice and data.

Some pictures of an LG handset that is labeled as 1xEV-DO. The label down the side of the handset says Video on Demand.

cgi.chollian.net

The pictures show someone watching a video clip...and then it looks like they are using the handset as a video conferencing device (though the picture is grainy). The top of the flip-phone is on a swivel.

This is one cool handset....

Slacker, I think he made some errors in following claims.

These phones WILL NOT support 3G data and likely will not be upgradeable in any way to do so.

This, IMO is totally depends on the carriers. The phone, or say the chip itself, is totally capable of doing the high speed data. But the way that high speed data working is that the basestation has to assign the high speed channel to the phone. So it's a matter of how much and when will sprint turn the networks on.

The only real 3G voice 2G data chip is 5010 which will not be upgradable to 3G data.

Both phones have a 1X Qualcomm 5105 chip set, but will not be ready for 3G voice at launch

I really don't understand what he meant by not 3G voice. 5105 is rel 0, but without turbo coding, however that has nothing to do with voice.

After reading the whole article, I believe the author is talking more about the feature of the phone from a application level, which is not exactly tied up with 3G. Yes you may not be able to upgrade the phone into WAP2.0 or J2ME. But that doesn't mean you can't use your phone for high speed internet access, esp. when you are using it as a modem.

This will lead me into shouting out loud for cell phone as modem again. Right now everybody are so much getting into doing everything on the phone. That will require a lot more processing power, think about this how much power you are going to use up when you are showing color video with 100kbps? Well how much of CPU left out for all the imaging when you are doing the high speed stuff? Using phone as a modem, on the other hand can be easier because you can actually setup phone to do the relay and not processing those high layer headaces.
