To try and "put the screws" to AMD using the method you and Dan seem to advocate would indeed really hurt AMD in the short run, but how would it help Intel in the long run? I don't see that it would help them at all at this point.

Which highlites the differences between the two companies and those who follow each. The AMD view is success is measured by how much damage they do to Intel so they assume Intel must also have the same definition of success regarding AMD. Nothing could be further from the truth. Intel does what's good for Intel, AMD does what's bad for Intel.

Fingolfen, you make a lot of good points. I think that results from some of the recent reviews indicate that Northwood is yielding just fine. In addition, the AMDroids favorite search engine, Pricewatch, shows plenty of vendors carrying 2.2GHz Northwood chips. A search for "Northwood 2.0" will also show a good number of vendors offering the 2.0GHz chip. It's doubtful, therefore, that Intel is having any problems binning at these frequencies. Like you said, the decision to downbin to lower frequencies is more strategic for the company. Intel is already winning the majority of benchmarks, and AMD is on their last legs with their .18u process, so I doubt they are in a rush to use up all of the headroom for Northwood at once.

RE:"Why offer a 2.6GHz chip a $500 when you can get $500 for a 2.2GHz chip?"

To regain market share and put AMD in a world of hurt.
