welp so much for my old knowledge.

as for mhz multiplying; not really being deceptive but to make the mhz more compatible. but since u say intel is faster, doesn't matter much. altho i think we are in that stage where cpu speed doesn't matter as much as it had years ago.

tx for the clarifications

Doren, how many common processor-intensive tasks can you think of that have NOT been AltiVec accelerated?

That's the thing about optimization. Developers don't accelerate everything they write. You don't use AltiVec to disable a menu item, or to respond to a mouse click. You use it for inner loops in common tasks, like compressing data, or rendering a blurred drop shadow, or decompressing JPEG, or compositing windows with Alpha channels on your display. Guess what? All of these tasks are AltiVec accelerated on your G4.

The key point is that CLOCK FOR CLOCK, a G4 is faster than an P4, and it's ESPECIALLY faster for those tasks that need to be fast.

>>PC folks have no clue that Apple CPU's are actually faster than Intel.

January DV (Digital Video) magazine disputes this. Apples fastest machine got beaten in almost every category by Intel machines, and newer faster intel machines are available while newer Macs are not. By the time newer Macs are available a newer generation of AMD/Intel machines will become available as well. DV is an area where Macs once held and indisputable lead. <<

Doren -

It's interesting that you should bring that up, because the P4 chip is optimized for one application above all others: the encoding and decoding of video streams.

Unfortunately, the P4 is slower in terms of instructions per clock cycle than the PIII and the Athlon, which is why it doesn't do well against them on most benchmarks, including those based on the productivity apps such as MS Office, etc. It has to run at much higher clock speeds than the competition just to keep up. That's a fact.

But then, people who are just running MS Office don't really need incredible raw processing power.
