>> Any opinions about how airport "rads" kills flash while minidisk escapes harm?

As a newbie owner of a digicam, that caught my attention, Craig. Is it an urban legend, or a scientific fact? Please link any articles that you might have.

"At home it costs me just short of $100/month. It is worth every penny."

It certainly is. However, I suspect that if you worked out how much the network costs to build and maintain, and divide that by the number of subscribers, the answer is more than $100/mth.

So where does the extra money come from? It comes from shareholders of telcos who have been kind enough to spend their money on depreciating shares so that people can have cheap net access.

What happens when these shareholders have all wised up? Answer, the networks go to pot and you start seeing < 20kbps throughput.

Then what? Most providers go bankrupt, the few that are left have to up prices - a lot - and the dream of ubiquitous broadband dies.

Any ideas for a 56k modem manufacturer to invest in <vbg>?

I have a lot of experience of putting digicams and CF cards through airport X Ray machines.

No problems ever.

Airport x-rays do not affect flash cards.

The irradiation system for anthrax being used by the USPS affects all semiconductors as well as magnetic materials. It is orders of magnitude more intense than airport x-rays. See the CFA press release at compactflash.org.

"While e-beam irradiation systems for the mail will damage CompactFlash cards, the x-ray scanners at airports will not. As has always been the case, passing CompactFlash cards through the carry-on or check-in baggage x-ray systems used at airports has no affect on CompactFlash cards."
