Another variation of that is that some folks who get laid off get compensation packages that prevent them from filing for unemployment until the benefits run out.

there's also about a third more unemployed than the reported adjusted number...

i've seen the unadjusted unemployment rate jump 1.3 percentage points in the past ten years and the headline unemployment rate not move at all. could see headline unemployment rate jump to 6 1/2 to 7 percent by summer after all this statistical seasonal massaging for Xmas is done with.
