2:07pm 01/17/02 JP Morgan sees sharp, early recovery By Tomi Kilgore
J.P. Morgan said it is now forecasting a global economic recovery that is "sharper and earlier" than previously expected. "A powerful global growth rebound is at hand," said John Lipsky, J.P. Morgan's chief economist. "Just as the effects of Sept. 11 led to a more striking and globally uniform downturn than originally anticipated, the global upturn will be both potent and broad." He added that financial markets, which have recently been reflecting growing optimism about a 2002 recovery, will be surprised by the speed of the rebound. The firm believes global GDP will turn "modestly positive" in the current quarter, with growth reacing an annual rate of 2.6 percent by the second quarter and 3.5 percent in the second half of the year. For the U.S., the firm's economists are expecting GDP to grow at an annual pace of 4 percent in the last three quarters of the year.
