It would cost MSFT $666M after taxes on a billion dollar settlement.

No, you don't understand. That's why I put "one billion dollar settlement" in quotes. That sham of a settlement was never going to cost them $1B; that was just a number that Microsoft made up to sound magnanimous. It would have only cost them $660M (you may recognize that number from their recent disappointing earnings announcement). But after taxes, that number becomes $440M. Convert it to per-share figures and maybe it will all come back to you. Or just go re-read the post I was responding to.

Unless you think they are in 56% tax bracket. The IRS might not allow the deduction though, since Extortion as an expense may not be deductible.
