<the very psyche of the Western mind, which is repelled by the religious fanaticism, the authoritarianism, or perhaps the despair, of such enemies>

Once more, happy to not live within that "Western Mind" (and especially the Media Mind, one Orwell
is enough)

"such enemies", does it refer to "Western mind" or "the despair"??

the author did not mention that the kamikaze program lasted less than a year(7 or eight months)...japanese today believe the program was ill-conceived.

if we make the cost high enough, if we persevere long enough to catch some well hidden operators, if we keep getting their cash reserves, the terrorist recruiting program will fail.

i have always favored no mercy in the field for terrorists.
now i like rumsfeld's masterful solution...who would join a program where the last 400 members, spent days and nights swatting mosquitoes while living in little cages in cuba?

if it is good enough for a dog, if it is good enough for a zoo animal...it is too good for a terrorist.

The restraint upon Americans' singular ingenuity for making war usually rests only with their own moral reluctance — a brake that suicidal attack seems to strip away entirely.

Yup. Nuclear weaponry has long been viewed as an unthinkable response. But if one has to take a choice between death now by suicide attackers, or risk the longer term impact of a few radiation clouds.... well, leave it to say that many more boomer&younger people than ever before understand Truman's choice, and can consider it now.
