Target Comittee ...... "Interim Committee"
HOW, in the face of such steadfast opposition by both military and statesmen that you yourself cite, did such committees ever come to be?

Seems to me you've blown a gaping hole in your own case.

And, being Canadian, why do you care? Canada is not a nuclear power. It will not face US nuclear weapons. And if anyone else uses nukes on Canada, they will face the might of the US under treaties between the USand Canada.

It seems to have been intended as a message to both Japan and Russia. One wonders if even a Japanese unconditional surrender could have prevented such an intention. The second bombing on Nagasaki would indicate that the Russian declaration of war had created some "urgency" in the entire staking of post war positioning...
So the US bombed Japan to prevent Russia from grabbing it? I'd call that a good use of a couple of nukes. I wouldn't be surprised if even the Japanese agree. Their gov't hardly had any love for the USSR.

And there is a PLAIN, SIMPLE fact that you keep skirting around and don't want to deal with: THE JAPANESE COULD HAVE SURRENDERED UNCONDITIONALLY AT ANY TIME. Period. Had they done so, do you think the US would have kept bombing them? Or just landed occupation troops?

An analogy: Suppose OBL offered us a conditional surrender. The condition being that Sharia as interpreted by the Taliban would apply in the US. Should we accept it? Or should we continue to hunt him down?
