"HOW, in the face of such steadfast opposition by both military and statesmen that you yourself cite, did such committees ever come to be?"

The Committees were APPOINTED." Jesus, have you never run a Corporation??!!

"And, being Canadian, why do you care? Canada is not a nuclear power

I never said I was a Canadian; and the World Court has not ruled that "Canadians"...may not care. As far as being a nuclear power...Canada is (and a world leader)...although their nuclear program is geared mainly to peaceful exploitation of the energy.

"So the US bombed Japan to prevent Russia from grabbing it? I'd call that a good use of a couple of nukes

In a shallow mindset--yes. But the fact still remains that innocent people were murdered, and the prevention of the Russian "grab" had nothing to do with the killing of innocent children. There were unlimited alternatives to demonstrate power and to "allow" surrender. The bombing was revenge, as well as being calculated to show a lack of moral "weakness" and an unpredictable instability...

"THE JAPANESE COULD HAVE SURRENDERED UNCONDITIONALLY AT ANY TIME"

But because of religion they did not. We are discussing the American choice; as that is the one that was active rather than passive--and which killed thousands of children.

An analogy: Suppose OBL offered us a conditional surrender

Analogies are usually stupid and non-responsive to the argument. This case is no exceptiopn to the rule.

If the choice was between accepting a surrender based on the condition that OBL's people could have freedom of religion versus an alternative that we would kill all Muslim children...then I would accept such a surrender. If he did not surender, I would not murder the children as a show of revenge or hate...but I would continue to go after military targets in my pursuit of him.
