re: Message 16947613

IF TRUE!

Given the timing and exchange rates at the moment, it would appear that this event is extraordinarily propitious and probably an extreme bargain: it represents possibly huge and very advanced capacity at very depressed costs (to AMD.) This is true without consideration of the potentially huge and very real synergistic benefits that could be even larger and possibly overwhelming to inteL.

Do please note that this comes in the shadow (from inteL's recent CC to ANALysts) of inteL's recent announcement of plans to cut iTs CAPEX plans for the year 2002 substantially while AMD is frantically trying to line up more capacity.

HHHHHHHHHMMMMMMMM?

WHAT DO YOU THINK ?

Patient Regards,

DARBES

UMC Denies Taiwan Report That AMD Will Buy a Stake in Company
By Alan Patterson

Hsinchu, Taiwan, Jan. 23 (Bloomberg) -- United Microelectronics Corp., the second-largest maker of chips for other companies, denied a United Evening News report that said Advanced Micro Devices Inc. of the U.S. will take as much as a 30 percent stake in the Taiwanese chipmaker.

``It's not true,'' spokesman Alex Hinnawi, referring to the newspaper report, which cited speculation among institutional investors. ``I don't know what the origin of that rumor was.''

The newspaper report said AMD would probably take the stake by acquiring UMC American depositary receipts to be offered by Taiwan's State Stabilization Fund. The fund will sell its holdings in UMC shares through the issuance of ADRs after the Lunar New Year holiday in February, the report said.

UMC makes chipsets for AMD, the next largest rival of Intel Corp. in the computer processor business. Chipsets work together with processors to control functions in a PC such as graphics display and memory management.

The company's shares surged as much as 6.3 percent earlier in the day before ending at NT$48.4, a gain of 1.9 percent. AMD's shares yesterday declined 3.1 percent in U.S. trading to $16.29.

I'm trying to figure out how AMD can do this! (Take a 20-30% stake in UMC.)

According to Yahoo!, UMC has a market cap of $23.4B. A quarter of that is about $6B. AMD has less than a billion in cash and it's total market cap is only $5.5B, as of yesterday.
