Then as a little kid during the hot Summer vacation, it was a mile hike downtown to the afternoon matinee and another look at a Cisco Kid ongoing episode (which they never seemed to get to the end of - had to come back next week) plus a cartoon all for 25c.

I'm guessing we might talking the 30's here. Here's a frame to put that 25c in that you might be forgetting....
----------------------------------
1930-1939
Population: 123,188,000 in 48 states
Life Expectancy: Male, 58.1; Female, 61.6
Average annual salary: $1,368
Unemployment rises to 25%
Huey Long proposes a guaranteed annual income of $2,500
Car Sales: 2,787,400
Food Prices: Milk, 14 cents a qt.; Bread, 9 cents a loaf; Round Steak, 42 cents a pound
Lynchings: 21
-------------------------
My God man, that was nearly a half-gallon of milk or 3 loaves of bread and with unemployment topping at 25%...

As a hobby, I do a bit of 19th and early 20th century research and I've managed to find a couple of links that help me with perspectives of the time. They are somewhat broad and simple in their perspective. But when I look at an "event" the links allow me to get a quick perspective of the environment surrounding it. You might find them of interest.
