victor, you asserted the zone caused people to eat too much protein and that intake might cause cancer. i asked for specifics but you didn't provide. you can't believe the media hype b/c they get it wrong... as an example...

my.webmd.com

>>The Zone and Sugar Busters omitted or severely restricted carbohydrates.<<

this is patently false about the zone. a major point of the zone is to ALWAYS eat more carbos than protein (9C g to 7P g). if carbos are eliminated then the diet would be one of starvation - no food whatsoever. i have no idea why they would say this about the zone. none. it is paramount to slander.

>>They may increase LDL, or the level of "bad" cholesterol, since a diet rich in animal protein often contains saturated fat and cholesterol. That effect is compounded when high-carbohydrate, high-fiber plant foods -- which naturally help lower cholesterol -- are limited or eliminated.<<

the zone lowers ldl. period. the zone promotes vegetable and fruit consumption - but especially veggies. some folks may not eat them, but they aren't really following the guidelines of the zone.

>>They may increase blood pressure, since fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy products, and whole grains have been shown to lower blood pressure.<<

i eat a lot of fruits, veggies and low fat dairy products on the zone. my blood pressure is fine and there is lots of anecdotal evidence that blood pressure drops on the zone.

>>They may promote bone-thinning osteoporosis, since excess protein in the diet triggers the body to excrete calcium during urination.<<

the assumption here is that the zone requires excess protein. the FACT is the zone protein requirement for me is LESS than that recommended by the authors of this article! i mean, how dumb can they be?

>>The Zone, Protein Power, and Sugar Busters diets caused weight loss via calorie restriction, but rigidity of the diet and limited food choices made them impractical for the long term.<<

1. eating the calories required to sustain lbm and exercise level is a good thing, not bad.
2. limited food choices? you can eat ANYTHING on the zone (albeit, the quantities need to be adjusted).

>>The researchers counter, however, that protein stimulates insulin secretion<<

dr sears point is that it requires a balance between carbos and protein in order to control insulin levels. he also argue excessive protein or calories will throw the insulin
balance out of whack. seems consistent here.

>>"Almost everyone I've seen who has been on this diet can't keep the weight off," Rosenbloom tells WebMD. "Initially, they'll lose maybe 25 pounds. But then it comes back."<<

i posted hundreds of testimonials, many of which indicate the opposite. in addition, this statement is hard to decipher b/c the zone is moderate while the other diets are radical.

>>Without carbohydrates, the diets often create a condition called ketosis, which serves to curb appetite<<

the zone is designed to avoid ketosis. period.

>>"People begin feeling fatigued. They run out of energy, complain of headaches; they can't exercise as much," says Rosenbloom. "The initial euphoria, the positive energy, fades."<<

i have tons MORE energy on the zone as do many folks who submitted testimonials as did the person who recommended this diet to me. i CRASH as soon as i eat too many carbos. CRASH.

>>The average person requires 102 grams of protein a day, and that should come from lean animal and vegetable proteins. In fact, eating too much protein -- in excess of your caloric needs -- will cause weight gain, says Lichtenstein.<<

the zone says i need about 85 grams of protein - and i'm about avg. DOH! definitely not more than 102. i eat lean animal protein and vegetable protein (mostly in the form of powder).

again, the rip the zone as high protein and then go on to RECOMMEND A MORE PROTEIN THAN THE ZONE DIET!

these folks, and a lot of others, apparently have comprehension problems. don't judge the zone until you know what it is.

can it be abused? yeah, eating 40/30/30 bars all day is very dumb. salad, broccoli, apples, oranges, bananas, grapes, celery, etc. get devoured by me. my diet is much better now than my non-diet before.

people need to put down the hater-aid and comprehend what is proposed. no, i don't believe all the hype put forth in the book about stuff which can't be proven. but i can back the stuff that is true.

1. i feel much better on the zone than off it - both mentally and physically.
2. i eat more food (not necessarily calories) while on the zone.
3. i'm not hungry.
4. i don't go into a state of ketosis (except possibly while sleeping).
5. i eat much better foods on the zone.
6. i have much better control of weight loss on the zone.
7. each meal is like a shot of energy and mood control.

the people that rip the zone misrepresent it 90% of the time. it can cause trouble if abused (bars day and night). the one issue that sticks is fiber intake tends to be limited if you don't gorge on veggies, but there are work arounds. no need to throw the baby out with the bath water.
