Just think.....with their new deal with motorola and qcom, they have the monopoly on Direct Connect, which they will be taking worldwide eventually. Anybody wishing to utilize this wonderful technology is gonna have to pay the piper.....NEXTEL, as they have an EXCLUSIVE agreement on this.

Personally, I had doubts about nextel for awhile, but I see they have very loyal customers that dont mind paying higher fee's, and they have a nice customer base and awesome technology......I would guess this company gets bought, before they go bankrupt.......too many other companies would love to get their hands on that technology and loyal customer base...especially when thinking about the future when in a couple years that direct connect allows you to push a button in NY and talk to your buddy in australia like he was in the next room......just my opinion, but I think nextel will survive and prosper in the long term......

Nextel is not dead, just suffering along with the rest of the telecoms, but their pain runs deeper because of their independence.

With $5.7 billion in total liquidity at the end of September '01, there is no immediate crisis, but they're damned if they spend it and damned if they don't. Nextel seems committed to a CDMA upgrade path, which will costs about $3 to $4 billion (just my guess), but they also need dollars for more spectrum. IMO, they can't do both and it seems unlikely they'll be able to raise more dollars in this anti-telecom environment. Stuck between a rock and a hard place I think they'll sell, probably to Verizon.
