"Perhaps rather than acquiring 15-25% of UMC (impossible), AMD will receive ownership of 15-25% of a joint venture with UMC, probably a 12" wafer fab, for an investment of $500M. That would put UMC's investment in the $1.5B to $3B range."

With close to $1 billion in cash and looking to profitability in q2/02, the immediate need for $500 to $600 million certainly does indicate that an "unusual" current "event" has arisen...Recent cc speculation on foundry requirements going forward would certainly support something along the lines of that which you are suggesting...(We should know more by the open tomorrow)...

Refer to post 68772:
"the Web owner said he
believed it was sampling in both silicon on insulator (SOI) and on a .13
micron process, with AMD set to show off samples of the chip at the up
and coming CeBIT 2002 trade fair."

Do you suppose that AMD could be readying an SOI investment???
