Given the gradual movement toward 3G and the migration from TDMA to CDMA2000 by at least some carriers, I'm interested in the total percentage of handsets sold in calendar year 2002 that will contain either QUALCOMM chips or royalty bearing components. We know that current estimates for 2002 handset sales run around 420 million. Would it be too optimistic to assume that something like 70 million of those will use CDMA technology (i.e., about 16 percent)?

One question cleared up for me is that even though we don't read the "multi million dollar agreement" wording in the new chinese licensing agreement anouncements it is obvious from the numbers that they are paying upfront license fees.

I agree.
