fyo, again seeing Apple on the list of HT charter members reminds me of what a TOTAL COUP against Intel/Microsoft it would be if Apple wrote the first x86-compatible 64-bit capable OS for Apple computers using the Hammer chips.

Their only competition would be Linux on the software side, since IA-64-based stuff will be in the $10K range until 2004 at least. They could write their OS initially, at least, so that it would only run on Apple hardware, or sell a more expensive version that would run on any Hammer; then, when Microsoft finally catches up and issues Windows supporting x64-64, they could lower the price and undercut Microsoft.
