If the purpose of such scholarship is to illuminate and understand it can be constructive. If the purpose is simply to denigrate and ridicule then it tends to be less useful. To read, for example, the Egyptian Book of the Dead with such derision would not advance the study of Egyptology or our appreciation of an ancient and great culture. One need not embrace a belief to respect it and the role it plays in many lives.
