On the contrary, it is the only effective technique short of extermination. This can easily be seen by asking yourself when was the last time you changed your views or were stricken with gratitude towards someone as a result of them insulting and ridiculing you? If these were effective techniques the world would have found harmony long ago. Showing respect, even when not "warranted", is the quickest way to receive respect. What we sow we reap. All great faiths teach this, even if their adherents do not always practice it themselves. Remind them by setting an example and it will change your experience. Sufficiently multiplied it will change the world.

I don't think that represents Christian thought.

Most current religions have something nasty or denigrating to say on the subject of people who do not believe.

Sure, the Bible says that those who do not believe go to a lake of fire and burn. But what is the lake of fire? It is living without God. So, really, if you do not believe, when you die, you die. That's it. I can think of nothing worse.

But, that is not a punishment. Or denigrating to say that when you die you die.

However, when you die, you do not have to die. Christianity is about hope.
