i told you the reason you idiot. dr sears focused a lot of his attention on testing his diet on athletes, so he highlights that a lot in his book and on his website. it's good for sales. blah, blah, blah, the zone is the breakfast of champions.

dr atkins has treated over 60,000 patients with chronic diseases and obesity. top-level olympic athletes are usually in good health and not overweight so they would have no reason to see dr atkins as a patient or to pick up his book.

the ironic part is, the diet that dr atkins would recommend for athletes is probably not much different than the zone. (except stupid advice like avoiding egg yolks). dr atkins has made it clear that you can eat more fruits with higher sugar content and more starchy veggies if you do not have a weight problem or you are quite physically active.

of course most americans are couch potatoes and many have weight problems so it's beneficial if they are going to lay on their fat lazy ass to avoid the sugary fruits like bananas and starchy veggies like potatoes.

top athletes on the other hand are extremely active, have more lean muscle mass, and probably have less insulin resistance than average people, so they could probably eat 40% carbs in their diet and feel good and perform well. although dr atkins specifies they should not be empty carbs, which are what many americans load up on.

so all this crap about atkins not being optimal for athletes or as good as the zone is a bunch of hogwash. dr atkins' diet is not a one size fits all approach like the zone.

dr sears is the one who is full of crap. he recommends the same 40/30/30 ratio for everyone. that is just stupid. i'm sure it works ok for many people including top-level athletes, but some people are so insulin resistant, diabetic, or pre-diabetic, that 40% carbs would be too much and they would still gain weight (which is the simplest way to know your diet is wrong). that's where the flexibility of atkins is superior to the zone.

so yes, dr atkins wouldn't recommend 40% carbs if you have a weight problem, are inactive, or are insulin resistant. but that isn't applicable to top-level athletes now is it?
