Look sorry to butt in but George Guilder is one of finest futurists of our time. His book, Microcosm, in 1989 was a beacon in the darkness of the history of technology. He is an eloquent, and brilliant wordsmith.

He was there with Shockley and Rock and Grove at the beginning and his incisive analysis and understanding of tech is among the best.

He just doesn't know shit about business. And you should not blame him if you yourself don't know this.

Hi Michael,

Re: The internet has been a wonderful tool for the small investor, who now has access to information only the wealthy had before. It has leveled the playing field and given the average family a chance to participate in the capitalist market.

I don't know what planet you live on. Here's what happened to the small investor during the Internet stock scandal:

pbs.org

Far from enriching the small investor, with the convenience of the touch of a mouse, and horrible online advice from "analysts", she's been fleeced. You may not have noticed that the NASDAQ has fallen from 5100 to 1900 and change. That's the small investor who has borne the brunt of that loss. The Internet simply let's us know how bad things are much more quickly.

Re: Your view - who now has access to information only the wealthy had before.

Oh come on! You gotta be kidding..... The insiders still control the game. Always have, always will.

Re: In totality, the internet has been a big plus, not a big minus.

Yes, we've created an entirely new class of criminals, the crackerz. We spend billions on security. We have more fear of identity theft than ever before, in short, the internet has been a big plus for the manufacturers of headache medicines. <gg>

Michael,

Here's something you might have an interest in:

gilder.com

Aside from the philosophical slant, which you would expect me to find a laughing matter, the researchers who put this together do a digest of interesting articles which appears at the bottom of the newsletter and is actually a kind of interesting quick index on the pulse of the technology press. Hope this helps. :)
