Dear Tench:

They could have used a $3000 to $4000 chipset already developed by DEC but, they thought the market wanted a much cheaper version of same that perhaps worked better. They succeeded and took the time to get it right. Otherwise you would have complained about how they made shoddy goods. Why don't you ask Intel why it took them so long to produce an 8 way chipset for the CPUs? Actually, didn't they buy a company that had one in development?

Besides, we are taking a difference in that the off chip communications start after the memory controller but, before the AGP port instead of the FSB to the NB. They had to make a 4 way switch for their 762 MP/MPX chipsets and for their Clawhammer they are making a 5 or 6 way switch (Sledgehammer might have 7 ways or more (one to each of 2 cores, one to each of 2 memory channel controllers, one to each of 3 HT links)) although they could be using 2 3 way switches plus a 4 way switch to do the same thing and they know how to do those at least. People evolute systems quite easily, it's revolutions that are hard.
