I don't think we have to. I'm not a big fan of Malthusian predictions of too much population and running out of resources. (more of a Julian Simon - Ultimate Resource fan) If one took world oil reserves in the 1970s and divided by consumption, we would have run out about 5 years ago. Same inaccurate static predictions are often also made for gold: 800moz of reserves mined at 80moz/year and we run out in 2012. Too simplistic. There will be plenty of gold mining companies operating well beyond 2012. I don't think we will be out of food or energy in 75 years, either.
