Dear Tench:

For Intel CPUs on their FSB, 8 way needs to switch between two busses of which up to 4 CPUs can be on each. The fact that the 762 can switch between two FSB, actually 2 P2P links, shows that AMD developed something that Intel had to go out of their house to obtain. Once one develops a 4 way switch, the amount of work to take that to 6 or 7 way is much less. Its just like NASA, the first 4 times, manned launch into orbit was hard, the next three times was much easier by comparison. The first revolutionizes but, the second merely extends or evolves.

Besides AMD is already 8 way SMP ccNUMA using someone else's switch.
