Pete,

For Intel CPUs on their FSB, 8 way needs to switch between two busses of which up to 4 CPUs can be on each. The fact that the 762 can switch between two FSB, actually 2 P2P links, shows that AMD developed something that Intel had to go out of their house to obtain.

Based on the Hammer presentations, Sledgehammer will have a 3 (or 4) way HT switch in every Sledgehammer, so there is no need to have one in the chipset. Another way about this would be to have single HT link ClawHammers and an external HT switch, hopefully developed by 3rd parties. API was planning on selling one but I don't know if they will survive, since Alpha is dead.

Pete, <Besides AMD is already 8 way SMP ccNUMA using someone else's switch.>

I missed this one. Can you show it to me?

Gee, all it took for Intel to go to 8-way was a two-FSB bridge. And it still took quite a while before Profusion was released.

Because of the P2P interface, AMD needed a two-FSB bridge just to go to 2-way. And it took them quite a while just to get there. Think about how long it will take them to get to 8-way. (Hint: It'll take more than just a mere 8-way switch, which itself isn't trivial. I might know more about this than you do.)
