Andreas,

Isn't die size of these processors a fraction of 100+ mm^2 of typical x86 processor? What would be the ballpark figure? MY WAG is maybe 1/5 to 1/2, some 20 to 50 mm^2 under .18u process, less with .13u.

I agree with your other post, that it would make sense to fab these in Dresden. I wonder how many chips they sell. I suspect that the number is still tiny.

LAS VEGAS, NV (DEVCON) - November 28, 2001 - Alchemy Semiconductor, Inc.™, an Austin-based fabless semiconductor company, announced the introduction of their high-performance, low power, highly integrated Au1500 microprocessor at the Microsoft Windows Embedded Developers Conference (DevCon) in Las Vegas November 28-30, 2001. Company representatives will exhibit the MIPS32™-based (NASDAQ: MIPS) Au1500's power, performance and scalability, displaying its highly integrated PCI interface, on-chip memory controllers and Internet access peripherals. The performance and typical power scalability ranges from 333 MHz at less than 400 mW, 400 MHz at 700 mW to 500 MHz at 1.2W.

Targeted for the rapidly expanding range of communications client devices, networking applications and communications infrastructure markets, the Au1500 employs a 66 MHz PCI 2.2 controller and is optimized for thin client devices and gateways; and for network-oriented embedded and streaming media applications. The Au1500 runs a variety of operating systems, including Windows® CE, Linux® and VxWorks®. The Alchemy Pb1500 development board is also available for system software development and hardware evaluation.

Jim Moore, Alchemy's President and CEO, emphasized the importance of Alchemy staying on its technology roadmap and introducing its second product in 2001.

"The next generation devices are being designed now, so it's important that we make available the optimum power and performance microprocessor for those design engineers," said Moore. "With this introduction, Alchemy has once again demonstrated that we deliver real products on time; first with the Au1000 - which is the only processor available now in its performance and power class - and now with the Au1500."

The Au1500 introduction also gives Alchemy the versatility of quickly entering new market segments.

"The addition of the PCI interface to the Au1500 allows Alchemy to expand into new markets, with an industry standard interface that can connect to a variety of networking components," said Shane Rau, IDC research analyst. "Gateways and other networking applications can now easily and immediately take advantage of the high clock speed and power management features that are trademarks of the Alchemy product line."

DevCon is being held at the Bellagio hotel in Las Vegas, and Alchemy will be at Booth 46. The conference is attended by embedded systems hardware and software developers, applications developers, design engineers and development managers. In addition to its Au1500 demonstration, Alchemy will also host a demonstration of its flagship Au1000 processor running the Microsoft Windows CE .NET operating system.

Pricing and Availability
Customer sampling of the 400 MHz version will begin in December, 2001. Pricing for the 333 MHz version of the Au1500 is $39; and $43 for the 400 MHz version, both in 10K lots. The Pb1500 development board is priced at $4000.

Andreas,

Good point. That might be an opportunity to get good technology relatively cheap. (but I wonder why there are no other companies interested?)

Maybe because every company that would possibly want MIPS based chip already has one.
