How about this version:

AND, Intel got the fab in exchange for DEC dropping any antitrust and patent claims it had against Intel!!

Now THAT's the art of negotiation.

:))

Elmer, I like your version better.

What really upset me with Pravin's version was that the implication Intel somehow coerced DEC, hoodwinked the FTC, and got everything for next to nothing.

I do agree that in retrospect it was a great coup for Intel -- a veritable gold mine -- and Intel drove a hard bargain. I don't think there was any coercion here. Let's not forget how this started -- with DEC suing Intel for Alpha-related patents. And then eventually having to sell itself to Compaq which needed its worldwide consulting organization, the Alpha design team, and nothing else. Intel picked up the part of DEC that Compaq did not want which is what you have listed above.

I don't see how one can blame Intel for business missteps on the part of DEC and Compaq. On the contrary, I would applaud their business savvy. I do hope they continue to acquire businesses like that with mature product lines.

I would have written all this if I thought that Pravin the objectivity to appreciate an alternative point of view. From his post, I didn't seem worth the trouble.

Intel got a modern Fab, office complexes, a production test floor fully equipped, experienced design teams

Experienced design teams??? No.
Most of the experienced designers including ALL the key designers from the Strong Arm group left either just before or just after the Intel takeover. I worked with one of them. He said (for a while), Intel was paying some of the ex-designers contract wages (>$200/hr) to explain to them what Strong Arm really was.

RE:"Intel got a modern Fab, office complexes, a production test floor fully equipped, experienced design teams, the IXP network processor design and product line, ethernet products, PCI64 extension products and StrongArm. All for less than half the cost of a modern Fab. If that wasn't a total coup for Intel I don't know what is."

I remember it, it looked real good for Intel at the time. Too good to make any sense.
Intel got the gold mine and DEC got the shaft.
